8 Ways To Cultivate Your Personal Style

8 Ways to Cultivate Your Personal Style | Nikki's Haven

"I could never pull that off," or "How did you find your style?" Are very common things I hear from people around me. For me I have always loved high fashion couture and it's not a very practical everyday attire one can wear. So I took my tom-boy nature and mixed it with a little bit of a edgy supermodel. I found inspiration in celebrities like, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Kate Moss, and Prince. All it takes is finding what you like and never second guessing your choices. Below are 8 tips to get you started.

Know the "Character" You Want Others to See

Who do you want to be? It's  always a question ask someone when they ask me to help them with their wardrobe. Dressing for you and your lifestyle is one of the biggest things to think about. This will help you identify what you will actually need in your closet, and it gives you an idea of what you actually like. Questions to ask yourself might be; What is my job title? How is my day to day life? What is my vision?

Be Consistent with Your Choices

Once you've found what you like and what "character" you want to be in your everyday life, next all you have to do is make sure that your buying habits are consistent with what you want to portray. If you want to do the more classic look, than don't go out and buy graphic tees and boho tops. Those two styles just don't fit together. All in all you just have to keep in mind what you want and what fits in that category. It's okay from time to time follow some of the trends, but guess what? You don't have to, be you, and get what makes you happy.

Don't Be Afraid to Experiment

Don't ever be afraid to try something "different". We always tell other people they look so good in things that we "could never pull off". Honestly you can pull anything off as long a you believe you can. Being comfortable is KEY, but you will never know how you will feel in something unless you try it. It never hurts to try.

Look For Inspiration

I find myself on Pinterest so often it's a little crazy. I am either looking at recipes, home inspiration, but most of the time it is fashion. Like I said in the start, find your inspiration from your favorite celebrities, bloggers and others. Once you start to see a pattern of a style, you have found your calling. You want to find things you like, and then start to create your ultimate style around that.

What's Already In Your Closet?

Go ahead and look in your closet and see what you already have that fits with what you are trying to create. Make sure you have all the basics or as I like to call them, classics. This will help you purge all the items that don't fit your "new" personal style. I have a basics post you can look over to get an idea of what those are. The idea is to have quality over quantity. You don't have to have a ton of clothing items to create outfits, that was something I slowly learned during my whole personal style journey.

Ask For Help

It's okay to ask for help from time to time, or even all the time. I still to this day will text, video, and etc my best friend in North Carolina about things I'm trying on in the fitting room. So go to that "fashion forward" friend and ask them what they think about an outfit for you. If you want to make things even easier and have the money to do so, you can always hire a stylist. They will bring styles to you, help you configure your wardrobe, and you won't have to deal with the hassle of looking for anything. Both your friend and the stylist are going to tell you the truth about how something looks, where as you can be more objective to a newer style or outfit choice.

Know Your Body Type

It's all about dressing for you and what fits your body type. You don't have to fall into the conventional social media conception of what is right. Play up what you feel is your best feature; legs, décolleté, waist, arms, or back. Whatever you feel you want to show off and will add a little spice to your style it what you want.

Be Confident

Lastly, BE CONFIDENT. That's all it will take for you to transform your personal style. You have to remember it's your personal style and not anyone else's. You're beautiful, elegant, and all the above. If someone doesn't like what you are wearing they don't have to look(haha). Once you feel great about what you have on and in yourself it will radiate in whatever you choose to wear.
